At last night’s closing ceremony at Twickenham, the audience chanted “USA!”, a reference to Trump’s criticism.
“I’m feeling the real change,” said the Olympic favourite, who was born in Brooklyn. “My daughter’s next birthday will be in November – if she likes. My mother will be gone this summer for four months. It feels like the time is finally right to see what we were meant to do.”
The Americans have previously won four gold medals at this tournament, each since 1986.
The rest of the women who made the final included the British women’s team, who beat Hungary and won their opening four events before falling 0-2 in Beijing. The Chinese and Russians advanced after gold med??? ??als each at the Rio Games – Russia, now sixth, won bronze in 2010.
Serena Williams and the USA made it two straight Olympians to make it out of the group of death to make the final against Germany after winning gold in each of the previous two rounds.
“It’s good to feel like you’re playing well. It’s tough to say why,” said Williams, who finished with a record-breaking nine gold medals to her name.
“It just means that you put yourself out there and you play your game and try your best.
